The challenge with this drill can be staying in the moment and trying to decide which of the two four corner you are going use before the punch happens, rather than just letting your hand and the attacking punch's position inform you technique. Anticipation is the death of the moment. Remember, although you are practicing a blocking technique, the TFA philosophy of your offense is your defense and you defense is your offense especially applies here. In fact, without the offensive component of this technique you will get hit by your partner's inevitable combinations. Try varring where your punch and don't get into a rut. Unconscious rhythm is the easiest telegraphic motion to pick up. Keep your partner guessing. You want to feel comfortable to punch anywhere the openings appear and not worry about focusing on picking up the attack because your hand does it on it's own. So remember, you only fight like you train.

One of my favorite philosophies to live by is 3 to 2, 2 to 1. If it is three moves, make is two, if it's two moves, make it one. Hard angular punching/ blocking is a prime example of this concept. It takes your blocking and punching techniques and makes them one. Punching and blocking at the same time with one fluid motion. Keep in mind though, to punch to block, and not to block to punch. Also remember this maneuver is extremely aggressive and assertive. In fact the timing , placement, and overall success rate a of this technique is mostly dependent on how assertiveness are with it. I can't stress how important it is to be aggressive and not to hesitate, otherwise instead of you cutting through your partner's attack, your partner's attack will cut through your defense. Remember to train this light because your partner is extremely vulnerable when this is executed well. So pull your punches.

Training Suggestions:

The catch and return is one of the more essential defensive techniques you can learn. There are some specifics to keep in mind though while practicing. Remember when you are attempting the 'catch' part of the catch and return to be very aware of the defensive spacing of your catching hand. Make sure you don't over reach the catch by catching to close to your partner. Doing this will alow them to change the line of their attack before you can defend it. Just remember the 'Barrel Rule'. Pretend your are in a barrel the width of your shoulders and none of your blocks should go beyond this barrel. This will prevent you from over extending and will keep your defensive system economic plus your partner very committed. But what about the 'return' part of the catch and return? Just keep in mind it's just a basic straight and that it is always better to hit fist rather that block first.

As with most knife techniques, keep your motions compact and basically within the width of your shoulders. If you are practicing the motions without a partner, either do it in front of mirror or imagine your partner is in front of you. Regardless, make sure you are aiming at your partner's vital areas with every stroke. Remember to stay out of range of your partners left hand when you vector. Lastly, practice this from inside and outside range and multiple angles.

With the box drill remember to keep your footwork small and your weight on balls of your feet and not your heels. Make sure you always start and end in you on-guard stance. So do not get on your tight rope or collapse your stance. As you get better at this, speed up the pace. Remember this drill helps you practice your ability to transition with balance in any direction. I practice this in 3 minute rounds in both directions. Try 5 to start.

Training Suggestions:

Intuitively, when being attacked, a person naturally tries to retreat. The rub is, retreating is the weakest position in an altercation. The most advantageous position in an attack is at the beginning of acceleration or the end of deceleration. Which means ideally taking advantage as the attack speeds up and or slows down. And of the two, responding as the attack speeds up is the most advantageous. The most effective way to do this is: interception and moving off line. Vectoring or angulation is the best way to do this.

Remember to practice this so that you land as your partner's front foot hits the ground and also practice varying the angle of the vector so to notice the advantages and and disadvantages of your positioning. Practice until you have no hesitation. Hesitation here will definitely get you hit.

Understand that I don't expect anyone to carry around a large combat knife, but there is a saying, "To properly defend against a knife, you must become a knife fighter." What I'm showing you here is the eight angles of attack, which will cover all the ways that you will be attacking and defending yourself from a knife.This also includes any other sharp or blunt object being swung at you.
Remember to practice this until it is smooth and fluid. Keep in mind that you want to keep your strokes within your body width, and generate power from your hip, not your arm. Keep your wrist straight, and your grip strong. Do not hold the knife like you're painting or using a pen or pencil. The knife should be at a right-angle to your forearm. Also, remember to keep your thumb in and over your fingers, as a fist over the knife. Lastly, make sure your non-knife-wielding hand returns to your center, right below your chin.

When you do decide to practice this techniques keep two things in mind. 1) Keep your hooks tight, within the area of your own shoulders. As if you were in a barrel the width of your shoulders. Also practice your hook punches without dipping below the plane of your shoulders. 2) Use you footwork to draw you in to translate the distance, and do not use the full length of your arm. This is a close range punch. Do not reach with it. It makes your hook to easy to counter. The hook is by design slow, and the the only way to mitigate this is with footwork and understanding of your distance.

Remember, that regardless whether or not your partner is throwing a right hook or a left hook the beginning part of this technique, the bob, is exact the same for you. All you have to to do is react to every hook the same way, with an identical bob, then let the direction of your partner's hook determine the direction of your weave. Lastly never back up or flinch during your bob and weave or you'll just increase your chances of getting hit, and that definitely goes against the first rule of martial arts - Duck!

In my opinion if you are going to practice a technique you should first practice footwork. The quick retreat is a good place to start. I usually use this as part of my warm up. Try starting with 100 quick retreats and advances and then increase to 500. Remember to stay close to the ground and limit your up and down motion. You want to translate most of your energy forward, not up or down. Finally, remember to keep your upper body relatively undisturbed and your movement dynamic and explosive.

Training Suggestions:

If you ever want to generate power or intercept in any realistic way with any of your hand weapons, including your elbows and shrugs - without sacrificing economy of motion - you must master this footwork technique.

The significant difference between this punching footwork and most others is, most other footwork to the punch techniques are exactly that - footwork to a punch. Most of these other techniques are two distinct motions - basically step and hit systems (e.g. Boxing , Karate, and Tai Kwon Do). Why? The up side to this step and hit concept is that you are very grounded on contact. The down side is, you limit your full expression of power by expressing most of your power into the ground in that step. Step and hit is mostly muscular tork energy from the rotation of your hip and shoulder, and is almost the same amount of power as your stationary shot. Seems a shame to waist all that forward momentum by just stopping and then hitting. Why do two things when you can do one (3 to 2 to 1 rule).

I show you the solution to this possible problem in this video. I show you how to collapse the set and hit into one fluid motion without giving up any rotational tork. Remember this is probably not what you are used to, so please practice this at least 500 times with all your hand weapons before you think about employing it. Also, understand the timing is very important to either hit before your front foot hits the ground, or hit simultaneously. Everything else is just step and hit and a waist of your expression because is not truly you.

The great thing about his technique is that it works sloppy or clean.

When you start to get some proficiency, start moving around off line and have your partner stagger the kicks. Create an atmosphere of reality but withing this limited expression of the of this particular drill.
